Evrensel marks its 30th anniversary

Evrensel, which began its publication life on 7 June 1995, has now turned 30! From that day to this, armed with the accumulation of thousands of years of human history, it marches towards the future with unending energy—not only as a means of communication among workers but also as a tool for the organisation of workers and labourers and the building of a new life; and all this under heavy material, legal siege and attack! And relying solely on its readers and the sections it gives voice to...
We can confidently say that throughout its 30 years of journalism, Evrensel has earned its place in history not only through what it has learned from journalistic experience but also through what it has contributed to it. We must particularly note that Evrensel, which has succeeded in becoming a school, has also managed to be a newspaper that publishes worker letters from factories and production sites at a level that cannot be underestimated when compared to similar examples around the world.
For instance, the revelation in our newspaper—via a reader’s letter—that hundreds of workers at Konveyör, Turkey’s 360th largest industrial establishment, were made to work for four days in a factory without running water, as if in a labour camp, along with the appalling working conditions, drove the boss mad. The worker who wrote the letter responded to the boss, who pursued him, saying, “I’ll pay Evrensel and find out”: “Our strength is our unity, our voice, Evrensel, which ignited you with a single letter. You cannot buy it!”
In Turkey, the class struggle, from beginning to end, has been recorded in Evrensel’s archives. The lessons to be drawn from every defeat, gain, or victory have also been noted on those same pages. While all these records allow for the development of horizontal relationships among movements of their time, the accumulated lessons transform into the collective knowledge of the class. To the extent that the newspaper of the class can convert its knowledge into political consciousness, it can play an effective role in the class war. This role is not only a description of the past from the perspective of working-class publishing but also a roadmap for the future.
We know that the advancing stages of the working-class struggle will increase the need for Evrensel in terms of advancing the struggle and will assign it more critical tasks. We are preparing Evrensel for tomorrow with this knowledge. We will pave the way for tomorrow by drawing lessons from both the thresholds we have crossed in 30 years and our shortcomings. We call on all sections of the working class to join hands in creating a complete workers’ newspaper, from its writing to its printing and distribution. This invitation is ours...
Turkey’s longest-running newspaper website
Evrensel, which began publication on 7 June 1995, transferred its content to the internet in October of the same year. Thus, Turkey’s first newspaper website went live. Evrensel’s 30-year digital history, much like Turkey’s press history, contains many firsts and innovations.
One of the important topics of discussion in recent days is the negative impact of Google’s algorithms and AI-"scraped" search results on news sites. We place special emphasis on tools that allow us to establish direct connections with our readers who have difficulty accessing Evrensel’s news due to search engine and social media algorithms. In this context, we utilise opportunities such as digital subscriptions, newsletters, and WhatsApp channels.
The latest innovation we announced to our readers in our 30th year is the AI-powered audio narration of our columns. Our digital subscribers will now be able to listen to our columns. (EVRENSEL DAILY)
