In November a minimum of 294, in 11 months a minimum of 2032 workers lost their lives in Turkey

In November, a minimum of 294, in 11 months of this year and minimum of 2032 workers lost their lives.

According to the report released by the Workers’ Health and Safety Council (ISIG), in November alone, a minimum of 294 workers lost their lives due to fatal injuries in the workplace. In the 11 months of 2020, a minimum of 2032 workers lost their lives. The majority of these deaths were caused by Covid-19. ISIG reported that workers have no choice but to face death and hunger.

2020 Workplace fatalities by month are as follows:

• A minimum of 114 workers in January,

• A minimum of 132 workers in February,

• A minimum of 113 workers in March,

• A minimum of 223 workers in April,

• A minimum of 166 workers in May,

• A minimum of 190 workers in June,

• A minimum of 164 workers in July,

• A minimum of 218 workers in August,

• A minimum of 211 workers in September,

• A minimum of 207 workers in October,

• A minimum of 294 workers in November.

• 248 of the 294 were employed workers (workers and officers), 46 of them were self-employed (farmers and tradesman).

• 21 of the deaths were women, and the other 273 were men workers. The women's deaths appeared in farmers, trading, metal, health, accommodation and council work sectors.

• 3 child workers lost their lives. Child worker deaths appeared in farming, chemistry and accommodation sectors.

• 141 of the workers were over the age of 51 when they lost their lives. These appeared amongst farmers, tradesman, food industry, mining, textiles, tree, communications, trade, office, education, metal, construction, transportation, ships/shipyard, health, security and council workers.

• 4 immigrant/refugee workers lost their lives. 2 Syrian, 1 Uzbekistani, 1 Ukranian.

• 23 of the workers were union members. Most union members were working in communications, education, metal, health, security and council sectors.

• Deaths appeared mostly in the health, trading/office/education, farming, construction, council, transportation, metal, security, energy, food, shipyard and accommodation sectors.

• The causes of these deaths are in order as follows - Covid-19, falling off a building/construction, worker’s transportation accidents, crushed to death, heart attack, food poisoning, suffocation, electric shock and violence.

• Deaths caused by Covid-19 appeared in the following industries (listed in order) health, trading/office/education, council, metal, security, farming, textiles, communications, transportation, food, press and energy sectors.

1 worker was under the age of 14, 2 workers were between the ages of 15-17, 25 workers were between the ages of 18-27, 112 workers were between the ages of 51-64, 29 workers were above the age of 65, the ages of 13 workers were unable to be found lost their lives.

THE MAJORITY OF DEATHS APPEARED IN ISTANBUL, ANKARA AND BURSA

34 deaths in Istanbul; 14 deaths in Ankara; 13 deaths in Bursa; 10 deaths in Adana; 9 deaths in Aydin; 9 deaths in Kocaeli; 7 deaths in each of the following, Denizli, Gaziantep, Mugla and Sakarya; 6 deaths in each of the following, Antalya, Balikesir, Diyarbakir, Izmir, Kahramanmaras, Mardin, Mersin, Samsun and Sanliurfa; 5 deaths in each of the following, Bolu, Erzurum, Konya, Malatya and Sivas; 4 deaths in each of the following, Afyon, Corum, Hakkari, Isparta, Kayseri, Kutahya, Manisa and Zonguldak; 3 deaths in each of the following, Cankiri, Edirne, Eskisehir, Gumushane, Hatay, Kirklareli, Ordu and Irak; 2 deaths in each of the following, Aksaray, Artvin, Batman, Bilecik, Burdur, Elazig, Erzincan, Karabuk, Nevsehir, Osmaniye, Usak and Van; 1 death in each of the following, Adiyaman, Bartin, Bingol, Duzce, Giresun, Hakkari, Igdir, Karaman, Kirikkale, Kilis, Nigde, Rize, Siirt, Sinop, Sirnak, Tokat, Trabzon and Israil.
