Trade unions representing 130 thousand metal workers have decided to go on strike after negotiations failed with the employers’ union MESS.

Türk-Metal, Birleşik Metal-İş and Çelik-İş have announced that their members are going on strike on February 2, 2018,  rejecting the 6.4 percent increase in wages on a three-year contract by MESS.

WHAT DO THE UNIONS WANT?

The negotiations which began on September 1st last year, between MESS and the trade unions representing 130 thousand metal workers have been stopped.

Türk-Metal demands an increase of 38 percent on a two-year contract, and Birleşik Metal-İş demands a minimum wage of 9 TL per hour on a two-year contract.

WHAT DO THE EMPLOYER UNIONS OFFER?

At the beginning of the negotiations, the employer-union MESS has published that they would offer a contract of three years and would raise the salary by 3.2 percent.

They then raised the offer to 6.4 percent in response to the demand of the trade unions by a 38 percent increase.

The workers have rejected this offer and decided to go on strike.

MESS DECLARED LOCKOUT DECISION

Metal companies including TOFAŞ, Ford Otosan, Otokar, Arçelik and Türk Traktör stated that MESS made a lockout decision and the due date would be announced to these companies according to the strike steps. (EVRENSEL DAILY)
