Arrested yesterday, Ayşegül Tözeren sent a birthday message via her lawyers: Since what is deemed fitting for me is a six-foot closed cell, take a good long look at the sky for me.

Evrensel Columnist, Literary Critic Ayşegül Tözeren, sent a message via her lawyers from the cell in which she is being held under arrest. Noting that it was her birthday, Doctor Ayşegül Tözeren said that she had served medicine for fifteen years and had probably served literature for more than this and called for solidarity.

Arrested in the early hours of yesterday morning (20 August) at around 1.45, Ayşegül Tözeren was denied a meeting with her lawyers due to a restriction order. Despite an application by lawyers, the prosecutor did not lift the order next morning. At a later stage, attorneys Mustafa Söğütlü and Erdal Doğan, who went to Istanbul Police Headquarters where Tözeren is being held, were kept waiting for an hour and then permitted a five-minute meeting on the grounds that they were not civil servants.
