Dr Anıl Özgüç, included among the '1071' signatories without her permission, resigned from her university post

Dr Anıl Özgüç, whose name was included without obtaining her permission in the text signed by the “1071” issued in opposition to the Constitutional Court’s ruling on the Academics for Peace, has resigned from her university post.

Istanbul Aydın University staff member Dr. Anıl Özgüç, who stated that her name had been included without obtaining her permission in the text signed by the “1071” issued in opposition to the ruling of the Constitutional Court, which decreed there had been a rights violation in the prosecutions of the Academics for Peace, announced her resignation from her university post on 1 August.

Following the Constitutional Court’s rights violation ruling on the Peace Declaration signatory academics, 1071 academics from various universities in Turkey signed a declaration expressing opposition to the ruling. After the text had been made public, certain academics announced that they had been included on the list contrary to their wills and statements. Istanbul Aydın University staff member Dr. Anıl Özgüç, whose name was included in the declaration of opposition to the Constitutional Court ruling without obtaining her permission, announced her resignation from university on 1 August on her social media account. Özgüç included the comment, “I thank you for your support and for having reminded me that I do not consist of a number, a ‘head’” in the message she posted.

WHAT HAPPENED?

A counter-declaration was issued signed by 1071 academics to the Constitutional Court’s ruling that the Academics for Peace who signed the declaration titled “We will not be party to this crime” had suffered rights violations. From among the 1071 signatories, Dr. Şerif Eskin, Prof. Dr. Ercan Eyüboğlu, Dr. Anıl Özgüç, Dr. Mehmet Gürlek, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Yıldız and Associate Professor Dr. Alev Erarslan announced that their signatures had been used without their permission. The number fell from 1071 to 1065.

Stated in the declaration including the names of the 1071 was, “We state that we oppose and will continue to do so bodies, organizations and initiatives of all kinds that aim to foil the struggle against terrorism and sully our country. We believe that the decisions of the Constitutional Court, authorised to pass judgment in the name of the Turkish people, must not be contrary to justice and the public conscience and condemn the signatories to this incorrect decision.” (EVRENSEL DAILY)
