KESK (Confederation of Public Employees’ Trade Unions) Central Executive Board member Elif Cuhadar has been taken into custody today in Ankara regarding a panel organised 4 years ago in the city Izmir. Cuhadar will be sent to Izmir after processing.

TARIM ORKAM-SEN CHAIRPERSON IN COURT

Hamit Kurt, General Chairperson of Tarim Orkam-Sen, which is connected with KESK, has been in custody for the past five days after posting his support for the Turkish Medical Association (TTB) on social media. Kurt has been taken to the Ankara Court along with others arrested on the same day to give statement.

KESK: WE WILL CONTINUE TO SPEAK WHAT WE BELIEVE IS THE TRUTH

Co-Chair of KESK, Aysun Gezen has said that the AKP government is trying to punish anyone who does not speak in support of its own political views. As the case with Elif Çuhadar, Gezen said this has started to be based on previous actions too, and that KESK has become a target for the government for opposing these repressive, tyrannical, pro-war and anti-labour policies. Gezen also highlighted that General Chair of Tarım Orkam-Sen Hamit Kurt has also been taken into custody for supporting the directors of TTB, and explained that the government was trying to expand the Empire of Fear it was trying to create.

“However, we will continue to speak what we believe is the truth,” Gezen said.

PSI DEMANDED THE IMMEDIATE RELEASE OF ELIF ÇUHADAR

Public Services International (PSI) shared a Tweet and demanded the immediate release of Elif Çuhadar: "Workers all over the world demand the immediate release of Turkish labour leader Elif Çuhadar who has been arrested by the regime for taking part in a public panel over four years ago!"

HOUSE RAIDS IN IZMIR AND HIGH NUMBERS OF ARRESTS

Police officials have arrested around 20 people, including HDP (Peoples’ Democratic Party) MPs, by using the ‘democratic autonomy’ demonstrations from 2014 as a warrant.

Simultaneous operations were conducted in the morning hours by the Combat Against Terrorism Team in the Konak, Cimentepe, Bornova, Buca, Narlidere, Balcova and Bayrakli regions of Izmir.

Those arrested include HDP and HDK (Peoples’ Democratic Congress) directors of the time and Peace Mothers campaigners. According to their lawyers, the democratic autonomy demonstrations in 2014 were used to justify the operations. Books and electrical devises were seized during the house raids.

Those who have been taken into custody include: HDP Izmir Co-Chair and EMEP (Labour Party) member Dilek Bakış, HDP regional director Mahsum Koç, HDK delegator Erol Akcan, SYKP (Socialist Refoundation Party) General Executive Board member Cavit Uğur, DBP regional director Haydar Tekin, HDP Bayraklı Co-Chair İsmet Akbudak, HDP Buca director Tevfik Buğakaptan, Peace Mother Behiye Yalçın, Izmir City Council member Kızbez Aydın, HDP member Mehmet Akdoğan, Melahat Kuş, Hanife Polat, Atiye Şahin, Kerem Ay, Bisar Ali, Ali İhsan Toprak and Ferzende Deniz.
